Thoovanam Waterfalls is a hidden beauty that can only be discovered after a four-kilometer hike through beautiful jungle. Nestled deep within the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, this stunning waterfall drops from an elevation of 84 feet, enthralling nature lovers and adventurers alike with its pristine beauty. The Forest Department-organized trip to the waterfall begins at the Alampetty Checkpoint, which is about 8 kilometres from Marayoor on the Marayoor-Udumalpet State Highway.
This guided trip provides an excellent opportunity to experience Chinnar's rich biodiversity. If you're lucky, you might see elephants, langurs, big grizzled squirrels (for which Chinnar is famous), as well as a diverse range of butterflies and birds. Unlike much of Kerala, this area of the sanctuary is in a rain-shadow region, resulting in a distinct dry environment that supports uncommon flora and wildlife.
As you near the end of the trek, the sound of rushing water becomes louder, revealing the breathtaking vista of Thoovanam Falls, which is fed by the Pambar River. Surrounded by peaceful environment, the waterfall provides a breathtaking reward for your efforts. Many hikers opt to rest and relax here, soaking up the peace for hours. For those planning an extended stay, the sanctuary offers eco-friendly accommodations such as treehouses, jungle huts, and dorms. The Forest Department also organises numerous more hikes within Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in partnership with local tribal eco-development committees, providing a comprehensive wilderness experience. On the way up, you can take a dip in the creek. Bathing near waterfalls is not authorised. Thoovanam Waterfalls is one of Kerala's most stunning waterfalls located inside a forest.
