Munnar's picturesque hill village has plenty to see, including one of its secret tourist attractions, Rock Cave, also known as Malayil Kallan Guha. This natural cave, located approximately 14 kilometres from Munnar near the Lock Heart Gap on the route to Thekkady, is well-known for its picturesque beauty and fascinating mythology. The name Malayil Kallan Guha is derived from Malayalam and means "Cave of the Thief on the Mountain." According to local legend, a burglar named Malayil Kallan previously lived in the cave and used it as a shelter to rob travellers on the road between Munnar and Thekkady.
It is also thought that in ancient times, sages and saints may have utilised the cave for meditation and prayer. Rock Cave, located opposite the Lock Heart Gap viewpoint, gives a breathtaking view of Munnar's surrounding mountains and valleys. The cave itself is large enough for a person to enter and explore, making it a popular tourist destination along Gap Road. A visit to Rock Cave provides not just a view into Munnar's natural beauty, but also a sense of mystery and history—an unusual experience that enhances your journey. The Malayalam term Malayil Kallan Guha means "Upon the Mountain Thief Cave." The cave has an interesting story; many years ago, a burglar named Malayil Kallan lived in the cave and looted travellers on the road between Munnar and Thekkady.
