The Periyar Tiger Reserve, located in the Cardamom and Pandalam Hills in the southern Western Ghats, is one of India's most popular protected habitats. The reserve, which spans the districts of Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, has been recognised for its excellent conservation efforts. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) designated it the Best Managed Tiger Reserve in 2022, out of 54 in the country. The reserve is a shelter for wildlife, including Bengal tigers, Indian elephants, Indian gaurs, sambar deer, wild boars, and leopards. King cobras, pythons, and monitor lizards thrive here, as do birds such the Malabar grey hornbill, great hornbill, kingfisher, and crested serpent eagle.

The reserve is critical to safeguarding tigers and biodiversity as a whole, as well as reducing human-wildlife conflicts. It promotes sustainable livelihoods to strike a balance between conservation and local community requirements. Regular patrolling, GPS tracking, and eco-tourism projects are all examples of management measures. Village eco-development programs play an important role in community participation. Since 1989, the reserve has also operated Nature Education programs to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
Boating, animal safaris, jungle treks, bamboo rafting, and nature walks are among the thrilling activities available at Periyar, allowing visitors to discover the park's diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can observe tribal dance performances, visit the Interpretation Centre, and climb to a watchtower for panoramic views. The Edappalayam Nights program provides a fantastic overnight stay in the wilderness. The reserve also houses the famous Sabarimala Temple, making it a must-see trip for visitors seeking both adventure and spirituality
