Periyar Tiger Reserve, nestled in the Cardamom and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats, is one of India's most visited protected areas. In 2022, it was named the Best Managed Tiger Reserve among 54 reserves in the country by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

Reptiles such as king cobras, pythons, and monitor lizards thrive here, along with birds like the Malabar grey hornbill, great hornbill, kingfishers, and crested serpent eagle. Rich in biodiversity and natural beauty, it stands out as one of the top places to visit in Kerala.
The reserve plays a crucial role in protecting both tigers and overall biodiversity, while also working to minimize human-wildlife conflicts. It balances conservation with the needs of local communities by promoting sustainable livelihoods. Management strategies include regular patrolling, GPS tracking, and eco-tourism initiatives. Village Eco-Development programs play a key role in community engagement. Since 1989, the reserve has also run Nature Education programs to raise environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices.
Periyar offers a variety of exciting activities, such as boating, wildlife safaris, jungle treks, bamboo rafting, and nature walks that allow visitors to explore its rich flora and fauna. Guests can enjoy tribal dance performances, visit the Interpretation Center, and trek to a watchtower for panoramic views. The unique Edappalayam Nights program offers a memorable overnight stay in the wild. The reserve is also home to the famous Sabarimala Temple, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking both adventure and spirituality.
