Historically, the expansion of spice growing in the area has been linked to Murikkady's development. Originally covered in thick forests, the region was progressively converted into plantations during and after colonialism. British planters realised that the temperature and soil were ideal for growing tea, cardamom, and pepper. As a result, many plantations were established, drawing labourers and influencing the local economy. The plantations were eventually taken up by locals, and Murikkady developed into a major hub for the trade of spices. Today, it offers tourists a taste of its rich history and scenic beauty while striking a balance with its agricultural past and expanding tourism industry. The history of the area has also been impacted by its closeness to Periyar Tiger Reserve, where conservation initiatives have taken on a greater significance.
