The state's natural beauty and vibrant colours lend a distinct charm to visual storytelling in cinema. Several notable Indian filmmakers have used Kerala as a setting, increasing its fame.
Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd was shot in Munnar, while famed filmmaker Mani Ratnam chose Thekkady and Munnar for Dil Se and the Athirapally Waterfalls for his hit film Guru. He also chose Bekal Fort for scenes in his popular film Bombay. International filmmaker Gurinder Chadha shot sections of Mistress of Spices in Munnar, while Ismail Merchant chose Fort Kochi for his film Cotton Mary.Several Bollywood songs have been filmed in Munnar, with the most prominent being "Kashmir Main, Tu Kanyakumari" from the movie Chennai Express. This song, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, showcases the stunning tea plantations and landscapes of Munnar. Another song from the same movie, "Titli", was also filmed in the region, specifically at Meesapulimala, near the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate.
