Situated within the campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), this destination offers a perfect escape for city-weary travelers seeking relief from dust and heat. Enhance your botanical knowledge by exploring a diverse range of plants, from medicinal herbs to some of the most rare flowering shrub species, all of which are carefully protected and conserved. The care and attention lavished on them is truly remarkable. Sprawling across 300 acres, this garden is considered the largest conservatory garden in Asia, hosting over 50,000 plants from around 5,000 species. The picturesque Chittar River winds across this verdant environment, boosting its natural attractiveness.
The campus includes a 20-hectare Arboretum with over 35,000 trees and woody plants, a Ginger Germplasm with 74 ginger species, an extensive collection of rare medicinal plants, more than 150 palm species, approximately 73 bamboo varieties from around the world, and an Andaman Islands-specific conservatory. In addition, the institute has a large collection of native and foreign ornamental plants, orchids, carnivorous species such as pitcher plants, lovely bonsais, bromeliads, gymnosperms, ferns, cactus, succulents, and other plants. The institute's principal mission is to conserve, collect, and research tropical flora.
It encourages both ex-situ and in-situ conservation practices. In-situ conservation involves cultivating and planting seedlings of endangered species like Mara Manjal (Berberis aristata) in suitable forest environments. The property also includes a Herbal Garden dedicated to the remembrance of Itty Achuthan Vaidyan, a well-known traditional physician from Kerala. Government Botanical Garden is one of the best tourist attractions in Munnar. The entry price is 100 INR for adults, 50 INR for children, 150 INR for cameras, and 1000 INR for wedding albums.
