The name Anayirankal is derived from the Malayalam words "anay" (elephant) and "irankal" (coming down), referring to a location where elephants descend from the surrounding forests into the lake. This natural spectacle adds to the appeal and allure of the location, making it really unique. The Anayirankal Dam, built in the 1960s, is one of the greatest earthen dams in the region, providing an outstanding boating experience on its tranquil reservoir. The Elephant Abode Boating Centre offers boat trips that allow tourists to take in the serene surroundings and, if they're lucky, spot wildlife—including elephants—on their way to the water's edge. The trek to Anayirankal is also wonderful.
Travelling through the picturesque tea gardens of Lockhart Estate and along the rocky lanes of Gap Road is a visual delight. The path also passes through lush forests with tall trees on both sides, immersing visitors in nature's splendour. Anayirankal is further enhanced by adjacent attractions. The Power House Waterfalls, located near Munnar, tumble majestically down a sheer rock face from 2,000 meters above sea level. This gorgeous position provides sweeping vistas of the Western Ghat hills, adding to the area's natural beauty. The mornings at Anayirankal are bustling with plantation activities, while the nights are peaceful, with the sounds of chirping birds and the subtle rustle of tea leaves swaying in the cold breeze. Visitors can also tour a modest hydroelectric dam tucked among lush plantations, which demonstrates a wonderful blend of natural beauty and human technology.
